April Showers Bring May Flowers: Home Reno Edition
Bummers to Beauties
We’re ready to remodel!! But what if…?? The excitement is real, but so are the nerves. It’s normal to have some confusion (and fear) before diving into a home remodeling project. Let’s take a look at 3 key areas where the “April Showers” of home reno turn to “May Flowers” with a little patience and planning.
1.The Inconvenience ~ The Opportunity
If you decide to gut your house, you may need to be prepared to live without a kitchen, share your private bath with the kiddos, or give up some crucial/convenient element for an extended time. SO…include in your budget provisions for temporary alternative housing. How about renting an RV for a week to spend time out of the mess, creating memories with family. Another tip? Talk and prepare the family for the stress ahead of time. Living in a brand-new space can be a tarnished joy if it comes with strained relations. So work together to create your plan for getting through the reno as a team. Families that get through a home reno together, can do ANYTHING!
2.Permit Hassles ~ No Worries
Depending on the nature of your remodeling project, you will likely need permits. Navigating the bureaucratic maze can have it’s challenges, and delays in approval can impact timeline. However, by following code guidelines, your completed project will meet standards of safety and be less likely to cause injury to you, your family, your friends OR future owners. Mandatory inspections complement a contractor’s experience and act as a system of checks and balances resulting in a safer project.
3.Unforeseen Issues ~ Design Upgrade
Opening walls or floors can reveal hidden problems (plumbing issues or structural concerns). Yes, dealing with these unexpected challenges can add time and cost to your remodeling endeavor. BUT, often when we pivot and problem solve, we’re left with something better than originally expected! Example: Open the wall behind the old tub surround and discover extensive mold!? Fixing the issue turns into getting a larger tub, and a very happy family. So take a pause, take a breath, and envision yourself enjoying the fruits of labor for years to come!
No remodeling project is without issue. But there’s really nothing to be afraid of. Assemble a good team, be patient, keep the end in sight, and trust the process. It’s worth it!
